Construction progress

Construction of the freeway in NSW commenced in June 2005. The freeway is scheduled to open to traffic in mid 2007.

October to December 2006

Works are continuing along the entire route in NSW including:

  • Earthworks, roadworks, drainage works, concrete paving, landscaping and fencing.
  • Retaining wall, embankment and noise wall construction.
  • Utility adjustments, bridge piling and construction.

Changes to traffic conditions

  • Traffic controls at Hume Highway Ettamogah, Davey Road, Fallon Street, Jelbart Road, Borella Road, Hume Highway at the junction of Young and Hume streets and Bridge Street.
  • Fallon Street remaining closed from west of the Main Southern Railway to west of Leslie Drive.
  • Closure of Olive Street rail level crossing.
  • Opening of new Atkins Street link, new Bridge Street roundabout and new intersection with Young and Hume streets.
  • Opening of Borella Road freeway overpass and roundabout at the intersection of Borella Road, Schubach Street and Short Street.

Construction progress July to September 2006

Works are continuing along the entire route in NSW including:

  • Earthworks, roadworks, drainage and concrete paving.
  • Retaining wall, embankment and noise wall construction.
  • Utility adjustments, bridge piling and construction.
Changes in traffic conditions
  • Traffic controls at Hume Highway Ettamogah, Thurgoona Drive, Union Road, Fallon Street, Jelbart Road, North Street, Borella Road, Hume Highway (‘rollover corner’) and Bridge Street.
  • Open North Street overpass
  • Close Fallon Street from west of the rail to west of Leslie Drive
  • Open Thurgoona Drive overpass.
  • Open Davey Road overpass.
  • Open Borella Road roundabout.
  • Open Hume to Atkins street link including new Bridge Street roundabout.

 

April to June 2006

Works are continuing along the entire route in NSW including:

  • Earthworks, drainage works and concrete paving.
  • Retaining wall, embankment and noise wall construction.
  • Utility adjustments, bridge piling and construction.
Changes to traffic conditions
  • Traffic controls at Hume Highway Ettamogah, Thurgoona Drive, Corrys Road, Union Road, Fallon Street, Jelbart Road, North Street, Borella Road, Hume Highway at the junction of Young and Hume streets and Bridge Street.
  • Close Union Road at the rail underpass.
  • Open Corrys Road overpass and rail bridge.
  • Open North Street overpass and rail bridge.
  • Close Fallon Street at the rail crossing.
  • Close Short Street at Borella Road.
  • Open Hume to Atkins streets link including new Bridge Street roundabout.
  • Open new t-intersection at Young and Hume streets.
  • Open new Bridge Street rail overbridge.

 

December 2005 to February 2006

Works will occur along the entire route in NSW including:

  • Clearing, fencing and earthworks.
  • Drainage works and utility relocations.
  • Retaining wall and embankment construction.
  • Bridge piling, concrete paving and bridge construction.
There will be construction activity at the following sites:
  • Davey Road, Seven Mile Creek, and Eight Mile Creek.
  • Thurgoona Drive.
  • Dallinger Road, Union Road and Corrys Road.
  • Jelbart Road, Fallon Street and North Street.
  • Borella Road, Kenilworth Street and Bridge Street.
  • Hume Street to Atkins Street and Oddies Creek.
Changes to traffic conditions
  • Open new Dallinger Road to Union Road link.
  • Open new Jelbart Road link.
  • Traffic controls at Borella Road, Bridge Street, Thurgoona Drive, Corrys Road and Union Road.
  • North Street will remain closed at the Freeway

 

September to November 2005

Works will occur along the entire route in NSW from Ettamogah to the Murray River including:

  • Clearing, fencing and earthworks.
  • Demolition works and utility relocations.
  • Bridge piling and road construction.
There will be construction activity at the following sites:
  • Davey Road and Thurgoona Drive.
  • Dallinger Road/Union Road and Corrys Road.
  • Jelbart Road, North Street, Borella Road and Bridge Street.
  • Hume Street to Atkins Street.
Changes to traffic conditions
  • Closure of Dallinger Road at Corrys Road.
  • Open new Dallinger Road / Union Road link.
  • Open new Jelbart Road link.
  • One lane in each direction on Borella Road and Bridge Street.

 

June to August 2005

Early works will generally occur along the entire route from Davey Road to the Murray River including:

  • Establishment of site offices at Dallinger Road.
  • Fencing works to secure the construction sites.
  • Vegetation clearing works generally along the whole route.
  • Minor demolition works.
  • Utility relocations including phone, gas, power, sewer and water.
  • Preparatory works at bridge and local road locations.
Upcoming changes to traffic conditions to allow construction to commence in a number of areas along the freeway alignment are:
  • Closure of Ettamogah Road between Main Southern Railway and freeway corridor.
  • Closure of Kenilworth, Centenary and Wilson streets at Parkinson Street.
  • Closure of Kenilworth Street and Wilson Street pedestrian bridges.
  • Temporary reduction to one lane in each direction on Borella Road Bridge.
There will be construction activity at the following locations:
  • Dallinger/Union link road at Corrys Hill.
  • Jelbart Road link.
  • Borella Road bridge (bridge construction on southern two lanes).
  • Bridge Street reconstruction.
  • Bridge Street/Hume Street link road.
  • Olive Street to Atkins Street link road.

Preparatory works include:

  • Detailed design of the freeway project.
  • Establishment of a site office and community display centre at Lot 57 Dallinger Road.
  • Relocation of water, gas and electricity utilities along the route.
  • Collection of site survey, geotechnical and other data in the local area for use in the development of the detailed design.
  • Regular meetings of a community liaison group for the NSW section of the project.
  • Preparation of construction management plans for approval by the NSW Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (DIPNR).
  • Fencing of the freeway corridor for public safety.
  • Development of noise mitigation plans.
  • Finalisation of urban design and landscaping plans.
